Bristol Rovers formed as the Black Arabs in 1883, in the Eastville district of the city. The name of the club was derived from the black team shirts and a rugby club known as the Arabs, who played on a nearby pitch in East Bristol.
They became known as Eastville Rovers in 1884/85, with a further name change, to Bristol Eastville Rovers, coming at the start of the 1897/88 season. The name Bristol Rovers was adopted at the start of the following campaign. The Memorial Stadium is the home of Bristol Rovers Football Club, and their main rivals are city neighbours Bristol City, with whom they contest the Bristol derby.
