THE DOGS-Fibbers, York-20th June (LIVE REVIEW)

I met The Dogs before the gig and I felt I was going to witness something special that night at Fibbers, York on the 20th June. Unfortunately this was an anti-climax, when I spoke with the band and especially the lead singer I found a deep, passionate character, full of self belief and emotion with a definite darkness. The group as a unit seemed very focused and full of belief in what they were doing.

I found the performance quite disappointing, probably because I had built this gig up so much, especially after the early meeting. I actually expected the front man, Johnny Cooke to be a deep character, crying out for help with his lyrics, totally lost in the music, instead I found his performance almost half hearted, lacking energy, enthusiasm or passion. There is no doubt he can write, his lyrics are very deep and filled with emotion, quite brilliant actually. Perhaps that was the problem, Johnny backed away from answering a question about what he chose for inspiration, when writing, earlier that evening in an interview, perhaps, the lyrics were too personal and emotional to really get into, or perhaps he was just off form, the group had just travelled from a gig in Birmingham the previous night, which had obviously been a heavy night. There were glimpses of vocal talent, but they were far too few and far between as he seemed to wade through the performance, rather than really getting into it and giving it his all. His voice was quite average save for a few high points when he seemed to really open up his lungs.

The Coronas

Stereoboard.com writer Adam Simpson had the pleasure of interviewing The Coronas front man Danny O’Reilly. The Irish group’s success has been quite amazing so far, bagging an award for the best Irish album, the acts following is growing and growing, especially after playing at some big festivals and working with people such as Paul McCartney and John Cornfield.

The group have been busy lately playing at several festivals, notably The Isle Of Wight, I wondered how the group had found these venues.

Hockey-Fibbers, York-17th June (Live Review)

Fibbers in York hosted American 4 piece Hockey on Thursday 17th June and they electrified the place. The group who play a blend of dance music meets indie had the whole venue dancing as they played there faultless set.

The sound is not unlike that of LCD Sound System, and then in a flash, the lead singer Benjamin Grubin brings out his harmonica and acoustic guitar as we are treated to some Bob Dylan style folk music, all with plenty of rock thrown in, the drumming was aggressive and high tempo and the bass, from their bare footed bass player, exceptional, as he roamed up and down the fret board, playing high tempo, warm bass. The guitar riffs were brilliant and metallic and the quality of the vocals, fantastic, delivering clever, catchy lyrics with amazing effect. There too was a feel of The Tin Tins, to their sound and the groups energy on stage, especially when the lead singer broke out the drum sticks and treated us to a barrage of drumming during a couple of the groups tracks.

Rockness 2010 - Sunday Review - Blondie, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes...

It's not rain, it's barely irrigation, it's just damp air. A weak drizzle constantly falls over Loch Ness on Sunday morning. Poorly camped tents collapse under the weight of the previous night's rain and almost everyone seeks shelter under tents in either the Go North tent or the Clash stage or any other pick of a myriad of roofed venues. Having seen Hadouken! on their previous year's excursion to the Loch and attempting to stick with my resolution to see acts I have never clapped me peepers on, I gingerly negotiate the mud outside of the arena to viddy Pearl And The Puppets and their attempt at a rain dance. The sunshine 5 piece from Kirkintilloch put on a fair showing early on the main stage but their middle of the road, innocent folk-rock feels flat against the meteorological backdrop.

Rockness 2010 - Saturday Review - Dan Le Sac, Plan B, Alabama 3, Leftfield...

Clouds roll off the hilltops and the grey skies don't truly break either side of the horizon and a guy in some tent near me shouts, "'Mon the sun!" at a minute gap in the homogenous grey. 'Mon the sun indeed.

The Saturday line up is more dance orientated allowing those who have not been to bed to continue the dance-a-thon all day and into the night. On my way to get breakfast I wander through Clash tent only to see Killa Kella perform his profoundly layered beat boxing and for all it's prowess and technical ability I know I cannot bear to listen to this for a full thirty minutes. It's not that I find beat boxing to be a lesser art form... but in my heart I know it doesn't speak to me more than coffee and crepes do right now.

Rockness 2010 - Friday Review - Crystal Castles, Enter Shikari, Fatboy Slim & Pendulum

The A9 is one of the least loved and most dangerous roads in Blighty, 117 miles of schizophrenic scenery commentated by milk toast radio warning the fearful natives on the hour that 'revelers' are descending in a Khan-like wave upon Inverness. "The Revelers... are coming!" they scream into the car speakers, "Hide yer wives an' yer bairns! The Revelers are coming!" As farmers collect their canned foods and pitch forks before descending into storm cellars. Maybe...
