Aeroplane Soar with New Track ‘We Can’t Fly’ (SINGLE REVIEW)

Tuesday, 06 July 2010 Written by Ginny Bullmore

'We Can't Fly', the new single from synth-heavy, alt-dance duo Aeroplane, is easily one of the best tracks out this month.

It starts off ambiguously, with a pounding drum beat which could easily take any direction. Thank God it follows the one it does.

After some African style drum effects and childlike vocals (which are, unfortunately, slightly reminiscent of the introduction to Mika's 'Lollipop') the song gradually builds into one of the most addictive songs I've heard this summer.

ImageIt manages to combine gospel-style vocals into an electro track absolutely seamlessly, so much so that you forget the creativity and genius behind its writers and simply immerse yourself in the music. The bass line is simple yet effective, reeling you in on first listen and refusing to let go.

The song has echoes of Calvin Harris, old school soul and R&B (and even E.L.O), which sounds like a terrible concoction of ideas yet works perfectly. Its laid back vibe will surely be one of the sounds of the summer - it's not a high-powered, frantic dancefloor track; more a soundtrack to a late night BBQ, like a more uplifting Cut Copy song.

It's hard to tell whether Aeroplane will come up with another single to rival this - it feels slightly like an inspired idea that was a pure stroke of luck and possibly won't be lived up to in the following releases. However there's no denying the talent that's gone into producing 'We Can't Fly', and if they can repeat this success with their follow-up album, perhaps in the clouds is exactly where they'll be.
