Matt Cardle Takes Christmas Number One Single as Take That Reign Supreme In The Albums Chart

X Factor winner and painter/decorator extraordinaire Matt Cardle has topped the UK Singles Chart today, earning him the coveted title of Christmas Number One. The singer went directly to the top of the charts, entering this week with ‘Many Of Horror’ his pop rendition of Biffy Clyro’s ‘When We Collide’.

The song easily shook off contention from Rihanna with ‘What’s My Name’, outselling the R&B star by over 300,000 copies. Despite a torrential backlash towards Cardle from Biffy Clyro fans, the Scottish rockers probably won’t be too upset by the success of the X Factor rendition: their original version re-entered the chart at Number Eight.

The only other new entry in terms of singles came from ‘Surfin’ Bird’ by The Trashmen. The song reached Number Three in the chart after becoming the focus of a Facebook campaign, however online forces were unable to repeat the success of last year’s triumph for Rage Against the Machine.

In the UK Albums Chart, Take That once again reign supreme, fending off contention from Rihanna and Michael Jackson’s posthumous entry, ‘Michael’. The British boyband have now been top of the chart for five weeks with their hugely successful ‘Progress’. The album is the first to be released since Robbie Williams rejoined the band earlier this year.
