The hype around Beady Eye has been building steadily over the last few months with details of debut album ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding’ surfacing along with two of the albums tracks being made available to listen to. Now comes the first official release, ‘The Roller’.
The first thing that strikes you listening to it is that it’s a change of pace from both ‘Bring The Light’ and ‘Four Letter Word’, the two tracks heard prior to this. ‘The Roller’ still has the feel of Oasis which will always follow any band with Liam as the lead singer, although musically it still remains nothing new from the younger Gallagher either. However, after the bluesy feel of the first two tracks, ‘The Roller’ is a bit of a change of pace with a slower feel.
The opening acoustic strums are reminiscent of several Noel penned tracks and the steady drum beat with short fill leading into each chorus is also familiar of the format Liam is most familiar with and another reminder, if one was needed, of the heavy Beatles influence in his writing.
When reviewing ‘Bring The Light’ I suggested the track sounded like an Oasis album filler track and hoped something a bit more individual would follow once more tracks appeared but the format of all three tracks so far just feels a bit tired and I actually think ‘The Roller’ is the weakest of the tracks heard so far and makes a surprising choice for first single.
I really want ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding’ to be a great album. I am/was an Oasis fan and I'm not going to purposely dislike anything Beady Eye have made public so far because of this, but there’s an aching feeling of being let down by this.
Liam has gone to great lengths over the past 12 months to tell everyone Beady Eye will be different to, and better than Oasis. On the evidence we’ve heard so far it’s certainly not either of those things.
I expected the first official single to be something that packed a real punch and would grab people’s attention, ‘The Roller’, sadly does neither.
Stereoboard Single Rating: 5/10
