For many British music fans, Californian funk-metallers Primus are probably only known for being “that band that do the South Park theme tune” and you’d be forgiven if that’s as much as you know. After all, the trio have hardly given us a chance to get to know them over the past fourteen years, having not performed here on a single occasion in that time. 1997, the same year that they recorded their now famed contribution to the then brand-new satirical cartoon, was the last time that Primus visited these shores to play any gigs. And their UK fans have since had a very long wait to catch them in all their live glory again.
To be fair, the band have not been particularly active in the last fourteen years. They released one more album, 1999’s ‘Antipop’, then took a few years off and have since done little more than just a few tours – situated elsewhere – and a handful of EPs. However, the past twelve months have been much more eventful for Primus, who reunited with their original drummer Jay Lane at beginning of 2010, after his 22-year break from the band. They followed the reunion with a major tour of the US during the latter part of last year and now – at last – they’ve finally got around to announcing a European tour, which includes two dates in the UK as well and will follow their upcoming string of shows down under.
Primus, who are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their Platinum-certified second album ‘Sailing the Seas of Cheese’ this year, go back as far as 1984, when vocalist/bassist Les Claypool formed the band with drummer Jay Lane and guitarist Todd Huth. Lane and Huth both left the group prior to the release of debut album ‘Frizzle Fry’ in 2000, leaving Claypool to replace them with Tim “Herd” Alexander and Larry “Ler” LaLonde respectively. LaLonde has since remained as a permanent member of Primus alongside Claypool.
Primus released a total of six albums during their active period in the 1990s, two of which went Top 10 in the US, 1993’s ‘Pork Soda’ and 1995’s ‘Tales from the Punchbowl’. Frontman Les Claypool, who has often been praised for his skilful and inventive bass-playing style, has worked on a number of solo projects since the release of the band’s most recent album ‘Antipop’ in 1999, including The Les Claypool Frog Brigade. In 2006, nine years after Primus originally recorded the South Park theme tune, the comedy’s title music was replaced by Frog Brigade track ‘Whamola’ with the original vocals, sung by Claypool and the show’s main characters, mixed over the top.
After fourteen years away from the UK, Primus are making a short stop over here in July with dates in London and Manchester. It’s been twelve years since the release of their last album, but the good news for fans is that they are sure to play a solid show of old favourites such as ‘Jerry Was A Race Car Drive’, ‘My Name Is Mud’ and ‘Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver’. For those who are less familiar with the band, but keen to check out the work of one of the Nineties’ most bizarre rock groups, give their 2006 Best Of compilation ‘They Can’t All Be Zingers’ a quick listen.
