Following on from the recent announcement of splitting up The White Stripes which was followed by Allison Mosshart confirming she was going back to working with her ‘day job band’ The Kills it appears Jack White is ready to go solo as he already starts to get itchy feet.
Known as one of the hardest working people in music, White has spent the years since the final White Stripes release (2007’s 'Icky Thump') busying himself with his other bands The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather as well as producing albums for his wife Karen Elson and rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson.
Speaking to Q Magazine, White suggested he wouldn’t be looking for another new band to play with however and may strike out on his own. "I won’t join another band again. Three’s enough for one lifetime. If I can’t say it in any of these bands, then I’ll say it by myself".
He didn’t elaborate on this so whether a solo album is in the works or not is anyone’s guess, but unsurprisingly White hasn’t been sitting around watching daytime TV with his new found spare time. He’s recently recorded a track with hip-hop royalty Jay-Z which he describes as ‘unbelievable sounding’ although he’s unsure if and when this will be released. White also recently guested on Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi’s LP ‘Rome’ which will be released on 28th February.
His record label ‘Third Man Records’ has been keeping him busy when outside of all his other side projects too and he is still working on a Blues series where he is recording and releasing a run of vinyl only singles which recently included Brit award winner Laura Marling.
"The idea is to catch bands before their show or on a day off. Dungen have just recorded with us and we have a few more recorded I can’t speak about yet".
Just as accomplished as a front man, hammering out scuzzy guitar riffs or thundering away behind the skins on a drum kit who knows, maybe he’ll try playing as a one man band. If anyone could pull it off, it would probably be Jack White.
