If anyone still doubted the influence that the BRITs have on the UK’s record buying public, the news that Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ has rocketed 46 places to hit number one in the UK singles chart surely ends that doubt.
The 21-year-old Londoner stole the show at the annual awards bash last week with her stunning rendition of the single, bringing herself, as well as many people in the audience to tears with the performance providing an instant reward.
It wasn’t just her singles sales that were boosted either, with latest album ‘21’ retaining top spot in the album charts, her debut album ‘19’ also jumped all the way back up to number four.
The achievement, combined with previous single ‘Rolling In The Deep’ also reaching number four makes her the first artist to have a pair of singles and a pair of albums in the top 5 since The Beatles achieved the feat in 1964.
Adele wasn’t the only BRIT winner who saw a jump in her weekly sales. Other notable winners on the night Plan B, Tinie Tempah and Mumford & Sons who won the coveted ‘Best British Album’ all saw significant rises in the album chart, ‘Sigh No More’ finding it’s way back to number two. In total, downloads of live BRIT performances topped 90,000 in just four days.
Elsewhere, Lady Gaga’s much hyped new release ‘Born This Way’ only reached number 3 on the singles chart, while PJ Harvey’s stunning new album ‘Let England Shake’ gave her a first top-ten spot since 1993’s ‘Rid Of Me’.
