The Black Angels - Haunting At 1300 McKinley (Single Review)

There’s a lot of buzz surrounding The Black Angels at the moment Stateside. Lucrative slots on Conan, a recent performance alongside Queens of the Stone Age and a Billboard Top 50 Album already under their belts, it’s about time they showed their mettle over here in the UK, right?
Well. Here’s their chance.
Well, they certainly gave it a go. Everyone knows the kings of bluesy garage rock like this are and probably forever will be Led Zeppelin, but that hasn’t stopped these guys from giving it a good old stab. The Austin Trio live up to their reputation allowing the crunching guitars, the psychedelic fuzzy recording and the captivating, yet simple, drum loops take over with relative ease. This track is something this band clearly could have churned out in their sleep which makes you wonder what they would be capable of if they actually tried to write a classic. It’s good. Very good.
Channelling the very best of the Doors and the Velvet Underground, the band from which the Black Angels got their name and logo from, it’s a rip roaring affair, especially when the whole band blasts in at the 52-second mark. The song gains a sudden blast of urgency from the chaotic smash that is the rest of the instruments having what is best described as a bloody fist fight. However, like most fist fights it’s broken up quickly and the song is over only a minute-and-a-half later.
Sometimes I complain a song isn't “polished” enough. Production values are important depending on the type of song released, but with this particular track with this particular type of band, the dirtier and grittier it is, the better by a long way. This song could have come straight out of the psychedelic peak of the 70s and no-one would have noticed the difference. Most importantly, it’s all the better for it.
