Is Tropical have gone to the Klaxons school of song writing. With the major exception being that this song, lyrically, makes sense unlike anything Klaxons have ever released.
So, the song itself: It’s pretty frantic, pacy, full of energy and sounds mature. After an opening thirty seconds that sounds more musically Chinese than Greek, filled with little more than vocals, a bass drum and a guitar, the song kicks in in full get your ass on the dance floor mode. It’s a thumping example of getting an crowd of Friday night clubbers excited. It grows and grows and grows successfully, building up what must surely be a crashing final payoff until it just stops abruptly, which is quite disappointing, but designed for mixing into other songs at a club night which is probably more forgivable.
Therefore, Is Tropical have crafted a good, if unspectacular piece of dance floor guitar music. It doesn’t really do anything particularly new as a host of bands have all released songs with straight up 4/4 drums, repetitive lyrics, a synth overload, electro bass and a frantic pace in the last few years. It does its job at getting itself heard by the DJ community (with no less than five remixes already on the CD I’m reviewing, all of which are worth a listen if you get a chance), but as a song to just listen to, it’ll probably fly over your head really. It’s not done a spectacular job at getting itself noticed, and probably isn’t the greatest selling point for upcoming album 'Native To'.
However, it’s certainly not a bad song. This isn’t an entirely negative review. It’s got a good, if vague message (Don’t be hating!), is pretty catchy and serves a basic purpose. It’s just not one for providing a wealth of inspiration for those on the search for their latest next favourite band. And anyone wanting to do that should probably listen to superior earlier single 'South Pacific' instead.
