For the sake of our readers can you please say who you are and what you do in the band?
Jordan Eckes: I’m Jordan, I play guitar and sing Mike Ferri: I’m Mike Ferri and I play the bass guitar Taylor Jardine: I’m Tay and I sing. I play the kazoo… Sometimes. I love to play. Cameron Hurley [Guitar]: I’m Cameron, I play the Trombone Rob Chianelli: I’m Rob, I play percussion TJ: Oh, We Are The In Crowd. RC: Yeah! We Are The In Crowd TJ: We are, we are, we are We Are The In Crowd
You’ve had a bit of trouble with that name in the past [The band used to be called ‘The In Crowd’], The In Crowd being a 70s band
TJ: Yep. RC: Yeah, screw those guys! MF: Dicks TJ: They’re a reggae band
Was it annoying having to change the name? Or was it just, “Yeah, let’s do it.”
JE: It was kind of a panicking situation. The name was still The In Crowd for a day, 18 hours maybe. I panicked about it, smoked like forty-five cigarettes until about one am, called our manager. MF: It’s surprisingly normal to call her at three in the morning JE: Yeah, we call her at, like, three in the morning all the time. So we changed it to We Are The In Crowd.
So how are you enjoying the UK so far?
TJ: We love it. JE: Love it. It’s very cold here. RC: Today is nice! JE: Today is nice.
It’s been surprisingly warm from our perspective…
JE: Really? Hate to see what cold is like.
Yesterday you played Slam Dunk North, today you played Slam Dunk South. So, which one wins?
RC: South wins! JE: South wins.
Does it actually win, or are you just saying that?
TJ: No, it does! Our sound yesterday was really bad, so our set was kinda like [waves arms around and pulls a face] weird and whatever but… JE: Today was awesome. TJ: South was great, kids were awesome. Kids were awesome yesterday too. I don’t wanna… JE: I don’t want to stress enough how much better the catering is here TJ: Oh yeah, food was great.
You just announced you’re playing the Borderline in London. Do you not feel you’re leaving it a bit late?
TJ: Wait… What?
You’re playing at the Borderline, did you not just announce that?
TJ: Yes, we did!
Are you not leaving it a bit late?
MF: Yes TJ: Oh yeah, it was a last minute show. We figured the volcano was going to get us anyway so we may as well stay RC: And if no one shows up we’ll just drink. TJ: I want there to be a ping pong table so we can play ping pong JE: Maybe we’ll just hang out with kids, not even play TJ: We’ll play our CD. MF: [mumbles something] JE: Cameron isn’t even in the band. CH: I’m not even here JE: Yeah, Cameron’s just CGI right now.
So you play upbeat pop-punk, is it not quite a hard market to get into? With so many American pop-punk bands…
JE: I feel like in the States pop-punk music is more a Four Year Strong-esque, Hit The Lights-esque happy hardcore type of thing. Fast paced. What we’re playing is more… pop-pop/pop-rock but it’s definitely hard to break out. We’re extremely lucky.
I’ve taken this off Wikipedia, so I hope it’s right…
MF: I wasn’t even in the picture on our Wikipedia page.
You actually got discovered after somebody hacked into your myspace and deleted all of your stuff
TJ: Yeah.
Do you still see that as bad, or good now you know what’s become of it?
TJ: It’s great. MF: I really miss community college… RC: Best thing that ever happened JE: Absolute Punk helped us out. RC: Thank you to the hacker.
You’ve been recording your album
JE: Yep
How’s that going?
JE: It’s good. We tracked a few drums and we’re flying back on the 5th to finish doing it.
Have you got an expected release date yet?
TJ: Sometime in the fall. JE: Late fall
Will you be coming back for another run of shows around then?
MF: I think you might see us before the end of the year
That’s pretty much all the questions I’ve got! We’ve got through that really quickly…
JE: That’s surprisingly quickly CH: Yay! TJ: Awesome. RC: Can I ask you a question?
Sure, go for it.
RC: What’s your favourite band so far today?
Oh, definitely We Are The In Crowd.
RC: Hey [high 5] You heard that! [points at the camera] MF: Just give us some questions off the top of your head.
Umm… Favourite colour?
MF: Blue.
UK or US?
JE: UK RC: US MF: Just U TJ: I like all united places.
[all laugh]
Favourite drink
TJ: Diet Coke JE: Whiskey TJ: Pepsi, Whiskey… [laughs] RC: Mountain Dew. I like Mountain Dew. CH: I’ve never seen you drink Mountain Dew in my whole life RC: I like it though! JE: You’re such a liar. RC: I am not! I like it!
How I Met Your Mother or Friends?
RC: Friends TJ: How I Met Your Friends. JE: Love these man, keep it going.
Simpsons or Family Guy?
RC: Family Guy TJ: Family Guy RC: Actually, old Simpsons
Family Guy or South Park?
RC: South Park, probably JE: South Park TJ: [nodding in agreement] South Park
Tea or Coffee?
JE: Tea. MF: Coffee TJ: I can’t pick
London or New York?
TJ: Neeeew Yoooorkkkk CH: Really? I hate New York so much. We’ve all talked about this. MF: New York State JE: London is awesome but New York City sucks. I hate New York City more than anything. If there is a hell below our feet right now it is driving around in New York City trying to find a parking spot and it’s freezing.
TJ: Sunglasses JE: Sunglasses CH: Sunglasses MF: I prefer sunglasses to hats. RC: Hugs or hugs?
Hugs, come here
[all hug except Ferri]
MF: I’m out of here, fuck this.
