I was sent the album to review and felt a bit diddled because there’s only the title track on the C.D. If the marketing ploy is anything to go by, it seems like Island Records have something big here that they want to keep under wraps until it’s release date July 4th.
The album’s production is credited to Jimmy Hogarth who has written and produced for Paolo Nutini, Duffy, Beverly Knight, James Morrison and Amy Winehouse. From that list you may probably be guessing that there’s another soul protégée on the way and ding dong you’d be right.
'Through the Night', the title track, is a big production, at a guess and going on the list above, orchestral arrangement. Yes, she has a lovely voice. Powerful yes. Seeming effortlessly smooth and intriguing. She’d be an interesting live watch. The track appears to be a love song, what I can gather from the lyrics of unrequited and unobserved. Ren’s voice is managed over the orchestral arrangement with this striking voice coming out of the speakers making me think there’s been a time warp and back to the 60’s. Ren’s voice talently suited to the ballad style of the track.
Starting softly with double bass and piano her melodic velvet voice smoothes over the top. The track grows layering elements of guitar strings, and percussion forming an orchestral ballad. Reminiscent of big band production of the greats. The chorus finds a full strings injection that creates a big band essence to the track. Making it seem as though the play button has activated a time warp. The tonal descent into “I Love You” insinuating a hopeless romantic track. Ren’s voice is that which is a natural talent that seems effortless as the track comes through the speakers. Grows and Falls. Makes me think of a night in a romance film dancing under a tree or something as sickly as that would suit the track. Undoubtedly she can sing on track, has the potential to be an interesting album. The track is an easy listen, and intrigue for the forthcoming album.
