Approaching Maverick Sabre for the second time in as many weeks, I was curious to seek more information about him before delving into his diverse musical mind.

After the intense round of interrogation like questioning, the Hackney-born rapper relaxed and sat back as we discussed the methodology of his creativity, as I was eager to see how an artist can squeeze hip hop, reggae, folk, dance and an Oasis cover into one set. How does Sabre find his inspiration?
“Normally, I don’t necessarily carry around a lyric book, but I do store ideas and influences off other people. Like if you see an old woman fall over at the bus top and no one helps her for example, I may make a story about that.”
Once the inspiration is stored and banked mentally, it then comes down to finding the right music to fit the ingenuity or vice versa.
“I tend to sit down and get the music going first. Normally with a guitar loop or a beat and just keep looping it and looping it and looping it and looping it.”
The intense and meticulous attitude in which Sabre attacks his music is quite eye opening, as he admits the atmosphere must be silent for optimum concentration; a musician who is dedicated to perfectionism.
“Sometimes I can loop a beat or guitar for like five or six hours straight, headphones on. I like to make it as intense as possible. If I’m in the studio with someone else, I like them to be quiet, so I can learn the beat more. This may sound cheesy, but let the music take over me, so it’s the only things in your mind and all the energy is directed at the music.”
This exuberance is noticeable, even more so in his personality, and due to this dedication in the studio, the future is set to be orange and not green for the Irish descendent, who boasts a treasure chest of new material in his wardrobe.
“I’ve got folk tunes no one has heard, jazz style tunes I have written, more guitar laying. I also have been making many hip hop tunes over beats and beat boxing.”
Afraid of being pigeon-holed, Sabre’s master plan is to please everyone. He said:
“I don’t like to specifically section myself off. I was influenced by hip hop, folk, reggae and dance and my music should reflect that!”
You can catch his set at upcoming festivals Lovebox, Ibiza Rocks, Global Gathering, V Festival and Bestival!
