Brimming with tales of heartache, loss, love, self-acceptance and finding a place to belong, ‘You Are The Morning’ is an authentic, defiant body of work that justifies every ounce of hype behind jasmine.4.t.
The Manchester-based indie-pop songwriter’s triumphant debut record was produced by Boygenius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker after she became the first British artist to be signed to Bridgers’ Saddest Factory label, but at no point does their star-wattage overpower the songs.
Each track on ‘You Are The Morning’ possesses a distinct vibe, thanks largely to Jasmine’s vivid lyrics and ability to construct self-contained narratives.
Detailing a period in her life when she faced transphobic abuse whenever she would leave her house to go for a walk, Highfield displays a particularly beautiful sense of melancholy owing to its delicate vocals, haunting strings, and raw, heartbreaking, anxiety-fuelled lyrics.
Kitchen, too, is a folksy cut that eases into a world of evocative storytelling and delightful vocal performances, while Skin On Skin is an upbeat expression of queer love and intimacy with a deliciously addictive chorus.
The Bridgers duet Guys Fawkes Tesco Dissociation is a rockier entry on the tracklist and elsewhere there are nostalgic echoes of mid-2000s British indie-rock on the concise and catchy Tall Girl. Despite its gut-wrenching lyrics, the punchy Elephant is infinitely accessible thanks to its densely layered guitars.
The hypnotic Transition leads purposefully into the final song of the record, Woman, an ode to Jasmine living as her true self. With backing vocals performed by the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, it’s a particularly poignant moment. To create music this unapologetic and full of tender self-expression, particularly at a time of increasing hostility towards trans people, is in itself an act of rebellion. And with Boygenius on her side, jasmine.4.t isn’t about to stop there.
