Hip-hop hero Kanye West delivered an odd and frankly inexplicable speech during his headline set at last weekend’s Big Chill Festival – which saw the star compare himself to the evil Adolf Hitler.
West played to thousands of fans on Saturday, belting out hits and interacting with fans during his headline show. But, to the amazement of the huge crowd, the rapper embarked on a bizarre rant which entailed how he is misunderstood – before comparing himself to the German dictator.
“There is so much bullshit going on in the music industry right now,” claimed West. “Someone needs to make a difference. People treat me like Hitler.”
The outburst was met with boos and jeers as the disgusted crowd were forced to listen to him talk for ten straight minutes, even after his half-an-hour late arrival to the stage, which he blamed on his loss of voice.
Kanye went on to detail the people who have misunderstood, upset, and offended him during his career – even citing his loss of an MTV European Music Award for Best Video back in 2006, which saw him come second best to Justice. He claimed his video should have won because of the amount of money he spent on it and the fact that it had Pamela Anderson in it.
It is not the only time the singer has childishly raged over his lack of awards – West claimed he would never return to the MTV VMAs after he lost all five categories he was nominated for, claiming that racism was involved in his heavy loss. In 2004, he also stormed out of the American Music Awards after he lost ‘Best New Artist’ to country singer Gretchen Wilson, telling magazines and news outlets he was “definitely robbed” and that he was “the best new artist this year.” And who can forget the tantrum he threw when Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ lost out to Taylor Swift – which saw West run onstage and proclaim that the Diva’s video “was one of the best videos of all time”. The episode saw West (quite rightly) branded a ‘Jackass’ by US president Barack Obama.
Kanye has teamed up with rapper Jay-Z to create hip-hop super duo The Throne, who release their album today. If you live in the US and want to catch the pair live, see dates and ticket information below. A UK tour could be announced soon – stay up-to-date with Stereoboard.
