Longevity – Tantrum (Single Review)

Monday, 12 September 2011 Written by James Ball

This is dirty.

ImageIt’s the kind of dirty that makes you physically get up and take a shower after one single listen just in case you’ve got the New Forest growing in your ears.

Longevity has been a knob-twiddler for quite some time, working alongside some of the biggest names in hip-hop, taking in a lot of the sights and sounds along the way. Oh, and when I say “big names”, I don’t use that term lightly. Jurassic 5, anyone? Kanye West? KRS-One? Cypress Hill? Yeah. Big names. He’s a respected name in the industry and he done gone and made a single.

Of course, unlike most anyone else, this is a single purely for the sake of it. There’s no album to promote. There’s nothing else. He just made a dark, grungy, after-hours rumbling of a beat and put his silky rap spits over the top, the pairing of which has lead to one of the greatest rap tracks of the year so far.

“This here is a hip hop anthem” he proudly claims in the very first line. Yes sir, it sure is. The best thing is that it’s all so damn simple as well. The slippy, low-frequency bass doesn’t falter at any point. The drums verge on tribal in places, and the sound effect mixers are used sparingly to add effect without diluting the overall feel of the track. The same goes for the vinyl scratching, used mostly in the clean version to dub over the bad language, and saved almost exclusively for a solo in the last quarter of the dirty version.

The B-side “Posse Cutt” brings a bunch of Longevitys friends around for a bit of a shindig, but lacks the overall finishing blow of “Tantrum”. It’s not bad though, it pales compared to the A-side, which only serves to prove how good “Tantrum” actually is.
