“I DON’T THINK SO!!!” Yells Andy Morgan, front man of Leeds-based punky guitar botherers Scams, as the rest of the band, a conglomerate of guitar, bass and drums, all better the living shit out of each other in a bid for total prominence. Welcome to the scene, Scams. Where have you been all my life?
Some may say it sounds a little bit “Bravery” in places, but for what it’s worth “An Honest Mistake” is a great song too, and sounds little like this. It bubbles for a little while during its first verse, not showing all its cards like the most prolific of poker players, before going utterly mental and throwing said cards at the dealer and proceeding to dance like a man possessed on the table.
The rest of the song is sheer lunacy but, for all the fun and raw energy the band are throwing into this track, it never, ever loses its melody. The bass is solid throughout, the guitars switch between a jolly dainty melody and a crunching stomp, while poor Daniel Harvey, sat behind the kit, has to hammer the skins at full pelt in order to keep the rest of what’s going on together, and a bloody fine job it is too.
In terms of production, it’s clean and crisp, but sounds like the whole thing could have been done in one take. It’s not entirely unblemished, and as a result, sounds far more rock and roll, and is all the better for it.
Subtle, this is not, but utterly thumping, catchier than the chickenpox and more in-your-face than a custard pie, Scams have written a brilliant slice of rock that deserves to be heard.
“I don’t think so” Mr Morgan? I tend to disagree. I definitely think so.NOTE FROM THE EDITOR We don't run any advertising!
