Dense yet fragile, cold yet comforting…the music of Blueneck is full of contradictions. Blueneck have developed into a band clearly adept at providing atmosphere. There is plenty to soak up on 'Repetitions', providing you like their music with more than a touch of melancholia. Rich tones abound with the piano of 'Pneumothorax' and strangely warm organ of 'Sawbones', whilst the plaintive vocals of Duncan Attwood draw the listener into deep swells of bizarrely uplifting woe.
The compositional skills of this band are without doubt. The gorgeous string parts and wonderfully restrained drumming performance gives the music a light, airy feel that befits its low key and doleful nature. “Repetitions” is a calm journey, one that never really threatens to burst into anger or even mild frustration…almost as if its creators decided that such bursts would be pointless.
On this album Blueneck sound as if they want a hug…not as if they want a fight. With guitars blending into the background frequently and the sombre piano as the most common lead instrument, Blueneck here are a band all about texture. They have been labelled as a post-rock act by many but this is as much an ambient record as anything else.
It is also an album that has a distinct vintage edge. The synths keep a fizziness reminiscent of Rick Wright’s work in Pink Floyd rather than a harshness more befitting modern users of the instrument. The overall production is misty rather than crystal clear, creating something beautifully hazy.
There are few flaws, but the major one of note is that the very nature of this record means that it does drag a bit as it nears its conclusion. However it is an immensely well-constructed record that deserves attention and praise.
Blueneck are experts in their sonic art and as Attwood invites the listener to “run away with us” on 'The Last Refuge', the temptation is strong. Blueneck share their dark moods with those who listen and ensure that both parties feel all the better as a result.
'Repetitions' is out now via Denovali Records.
