It seems that Leeds mob Blacklisters could not quite bear to let the year escape without giving us one last reminder of their jabbing hardcore influenced noise. Thankfully “I Can Confirm” is not just gratuitous noise making. Blacklisters do have something about them, something that makes this scribe think that their forthcoming debut record will be pretty spectacular when it is finally released next year.
On this track all the components that make Blacklisters such a highly promising band are present and correct. It is the rhythm section of bassist Owen Griffiths and drummer Alistair Stobbart that drive the songs forward while guitarist Dan Beesley layers riffs over the top that sound like the riffs Buzz Osbourne would write if he decided that what the Melvins really wanted all along was to sound like Big Black. Massive, overwhelming swells of distortion are left to surround the strangled vocals of Billy Mason-Wood as this track descends into its deformed and demented climax.
Frankly this is exactly what Blacklisters do best, and it also shows a neat slice of progression from previous single “Swords”…in that this is ruthlessly better. When Blacklisters do unleash a full-length it will take listeners weeks to recover, which is exactly what the world needs.
“I Can Confirm” is available now as a download only single from Brew Records.
