The Jim Jones Revue head out on a short nine-date headline UK tour tomorrow and exclusively showcase new material from their eagerly anticipated third album. Following a headlining show at Le Beat Bepsoke Festival at 229 in London tonight, Thursday 5th April, The Jim Jones Revue will bring their unique brand of rock’n’roll ramamlama to cities and towns they either haven’t played before or haven’t played in a long time. Prior to hitting the towns and cities of Gloucester, Wales' very own Swansea, Wolverhampton, Preston, York and Stoke, Jim Jones Revue guitarist Rupert Orton took time out to talk to Stereoboard about the upcoming tour, the band's main influences and the anticipated third album.
Thanks for chatting to us Rupert, first thing, can you tell us a bit about the Jim Jones Revue for those who are unfamiliar with the band?
The Jim Jones Revue are a piano driven Rock n Roll band based in East London ... The music is full on & uplifting.
Can you give us a little insight into how your sound and style developed? Who were your early heroes?
The initial inspiration for the band came from the early recordings of Little Richard. We took the spirit and energy from that and identified the links with all the other music we've ever respected. That then became a very large but consistently intense playground for us to work in.
Current album 'Burning Down The House' was released in 2010. A third studio album is on the way. How is that coming along?
We've been gathering songs & ideas for a little while now & working on trying to choose the best stuff to fine tune. We're just starting off a selected UK tour and looking forward to trying out a good sized batch of new material.
You toured 'Burning Down The House' across the world, all over Europe, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Now you've been on the road a bit, what do you find to be the best and worst parts of being able to tour?
It is hard work, quite often a punishing schedule...but at the end of the day we're making a living doing what we love. You can't really get much better than that can you?
What would you say are the band's favourite moments or greatest achievements to date?
We've had some real moments of achievement...I guess the David Letterman Show was quite a big deal...Jools Holland... Playing with Jack White...Doing 'The Big Day Out' tour in Australia with the Stooges, Griderman, and Primal Scream or hanging out with Mick Jones after one of our London shows are amongst the most real stand out moments.
If Jim Jones Revue could collaborate/tour with one band and one individual (alive or dead), who would it be?
Jack White, Andre 3000, Tom Waits?
Who are you currently listening to? Any bands you're influenced by/similar to yourself worth checking out?
If it's Rock n Roll you're looking for, you could do a lot worse that 'Nick Curran & the Lowlifes' from Texas.
Following the UK tour, what is next on the horizon for Jim Jones Revue? What is planned for the next 12 months?
All of our time will be directed towards finishing off the next LP. Then it's pretty much a case of - get on the road and kick the shit out of it!
Anything else you'd like to add?
Come on Swansea. Get your dancing shoes on and let's raise the dead before Easter Sunday!
