The new Killers single "Runaways" wouldn't have been out of place in the Joan Jett biopic of the same name. There is a distinctly classic rock sound to the track, with tales of teenage love on the run, a classic American fairy tale.
American music is without doubt the undertone of the song, with a Tom Petty'esque introduction giving way to a Springsteen-like chorus. Written during the Day & Age tour, the band didn't really know where it fitted, but the song has found a home on the upcoming album "Battleborn". The lyrics tell a story of a young couple battling with the realities and self-doubt of looking after themselves and an unborn child.
Brandon Flowers' vocals are the most daring so far as part of the Killers, and performing the latter half of the track live is going to be a challenge. The rhythm section played a more prominent part in Day & Age, and if Runaways is anything to go by, so will "Battleborn". The military style drum section explodes into life, and will surprise a few people, as well as a few speaker systems.
As was the case with previous albums "Sam's Town" and "Day & Age", the band have released another anthem with which to launch their new LP. "Runaways" is a great alternative summer song that will no doubt be buried in air play by the likes of Will Smith's 80's classic.
"Battleborn" is due to be released 17th September.
