Superstar singer and pianist Sir Elton John has confessed that he wasted a large part of his life on drugs - and wishes he found sobriety sooner than he did.
The world-famous musician, who was knighted by the Queen 1998, overcame his battle with alcohol and cocaine addiction at around 1990, but admits that he ‘wasted’ too many years on substance abuse, and described addiction as a ‘disease’.
Speaking on the Today Show, Sir Elton explained: “I wasted such a big part of my life. I was a drug addict and self-absorbed. You know, I was having people die right, left, and centre around me, friends. And yet I didn't stop the life that I had, which is the terrible thing about addiction. It's that - you know, it's that bad of a disease.”
The comments echo statements he’s made in the past - like in Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, which saw the star say: “It was fun in the early days because I thought, being shy, that cocaine, because it made me talk, was the key - 'I can talk now, I can be one of the gang, I can fit in'. I lost all my friends and the people that loved me didn't want to know me. My mother left the country.”
Though he’s suffered with the problems in the past, he’s now cleaned up his act - and is enjoying his career to it’s full. If you’re a fan, you can catch him performing in London’s Wembley Arena on Friday September 21st - just follow the link below to find tickets.
