Aiden Grimshaw is perhaps famous for having the most memorable quiff on an X Factor contestant since the show’s inception; but that was two years ago and now, like many of the shows participants, he’s keen to distance himself from the commercial conformity of ITV’s juggernaut and to create a new identity, personal to himself as a music artist.
His debut record, ‘Misty Eye’ is certain to play a big part in this, an album that he’s been working on for the last two years and the reason that he relocated from his native Blackpool to the capital city in order to produce.
The album itself, seems thoughtful and it would be unfair to say that Grimshaw isn’t talented; he can certainly sing, but there’s nothing particularly significant about his vocals. Stylistically, it’s not too much of a departure from some of his X Factor performances; arms-length cold and clinical.
In a bid to be arty, ‘Misty Eye’ forfeits any tangible melodies and contains an overindulgent amount of sound effects, out of place blast beats and cringey 80’s-style keys which effectively cheapen Grimshaw’s raw capability.
The tempo varies and there are some definitively emotive moments, but there’s nothing evidently soulful about this record and it’s lyrically basic. The record is a bizarre cacophony of gimmicky atmospheric bells and whistles making it oddly megalomaniac. Perhaps it translates better in a live capacity, but why risk it?
Aiden's debut album 'Misty Eye' was released on 20th August. He tours the UK in September and October.
