Somerset singer Gabrielle Aplin has announced that she will release her brilliant reworking of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘The Power of Love’ - the track which is set to soundtrack the ‘hotly awaited and annually acclaimed’ John Lewis Christmas advert - The Journey - today, Friday November 9th.
Asked to record the song by John Lewis, Gabrielle was initially hesitant that she could bring her own alchemy to a track that was already quite perfect - but she’s put an incredible twist on the track, which you can check out below.
“The lyrics are so strong and powerful but the song is so intricate and beautiful, I was fascinated with the juxtaposition of it,” Aplin commented. “What I really wanted to do was strip the production away but keep the energy of the song. And I wanted it to be minimal and wintry.”
Originally recorded for John Lewis during a session with David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything), the single version was subsequently co-produced by Gabrielle’s current album producer and collaborator Mike Spencer (Emeli Sande, Alex Clare). By coincidence, the single is likely to make its chart impact almost 28 years to the day after the song’s original release on November 19th 1984.
You can catch Aplin performing the track - as well as a bunch of a her hugely popular tunes - as she tours the UK throughout this month. Check the dates and links below to find tickets.
Here is the John Lewis 2012 Christmas Advert - The Journey, which the retailer describes as:
"The advert’s called ‘The Journey’ and it opens in a family’s snow-covered garden, with children making a snowman and snow woman. When the snowman has mysteriously disappeared the next morning, we’re transported to a magical world as we follow the determined snowman on his epic journey across river, mountain, road and city."
"The motive for the snowman’s journey isn’t revealed until the last scene, when we see him return on Christmas morning with the perfect gift."
