Mountains - Centralia (Album Review)

They say dogs look like their owners. Well, in the case of Mountains at least, an ambient/post-rock duo of Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp from Brooklyn, here is one band that sounds like their name.

ImageTo say that 'Centralia' soars would be something of an understatement. Over the course of its seven tracks, this is a record that scales the sort of peaks that we can only really dream of.

As an album of strengths based primarily in the sound of its sound rather than in traditional songwriting and structures, 'Centralia' really sees Mountains come into their own. Yes there are discernible instruments throughout this record. In fact, this is as much a ‘guitar’ record as any standard post-rock album you are likely to hear, but this is guitar music that fails to attach any special importance of privilege to the status of the guitar in the songs. A mammoth track like 'Propeller' utilises the instrument like a weather pattern or an idea. Self-generating and perhaps self-permeating, swells of organic instrument rise to a non-existent crescendo before fading gently into resounding nothingness.

This album sounds like the triumph of scaling heights one never thought one could reach. This album provides hope and comfort and all the wonderful elation that brilliant music can provide. It may not be especially unique and it may not become your new favourite record, but for the time you allow it 'Centralia' will smother you in its gorgeous textures and shimmering, beautiful noise.

'Centralia' is out today, Monday 21st January, via Thrill Jockey.
