An American teenage girl who performed at Barack Obama’s recent inauguration was tragically gunned down this week, in what is believed to be a gang-related crime.
15 year-old Hadiya Pendleton sang alongside mates from Kings College Prep School at the celebratory ceremony earlier this month, which was in honour of Obama earning a second term as US President.
But, just over a week after the event, Pendleton was shot dead in a park, after a gunman - who mistook her and her group of friends for members of an opposing gang - lept over a fence and sprayed them with a shower of bullets, also injuring two males.
The Telegraph reports that White House spokesperson Jay Carney has said: “It's a terrible tragedy any time a young person is struck down with so much of their life ahead of them, and we see it far too often. And as the President has said, we will never be able to eradicate every act of evil in this country, but we – but if we can save any one child's life, we have an obligation to try when it comes to this scourge of gun violence.”
