Metallica Reveal Orion Music + More Festival Line-Up

American thrash metal titans Metallica have revealed some of the bands that’ll be appearing at the second installment of their Orion Music + More Festival, which takes place on June 8th-9th at Belle Isle, Detroit.
As usual, Metallica themselves will headline one night of the festival, while funkadelic rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers will headline the other. Also confirmed are Deftones, Rise Against, and English rockers Foals, as well as Japandroids, The Joy Formidable, Death Grips, Dropkick Murphys, and The Bronx - a full list can be seen below.
Surprisingly for some, the Orion Music + More Festivals aren’t metal orientated, and features a variety of great music - with drummer Lars Ulrich stating that it was about ‘diversity and new experiences’. They’ll even be including a dance music tent this time around, with the likes of Bassnectar, Borgore, and Dillon Francis performing.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Ulrich said of the festival: “Our idea was to bring North America the kind of festival experience you get in Europe, which is all about diversity and new experiences. When we first proposed this, people were like, 'Why isn't Metallica doing a metal fest?' That surprised me; we weren't interested in doing that. Admittedly, a lot of things we put together could've been weird, but we were stunned how people really vibed on it.”
He continued on to talk about the addition of the dance music festival, saying: “For that, we have to blame our kids. Hetfield and I went with our kids to watch Skrillex at a festival we were both playing, and we were blown away by his presentation – he had 25,000 kids going insane. We thought, 'We've got to get that!' A lot of those guys come from a background in heavy music, and you can hear it – Bassnectar is a huge metal fan. A lot of the rock fans might be sceptical, but when they see it’s about energy and unison, they'll relate to it.”
