Jailed Pussy Riot Member Maria Alyokhina Hospitalised A Week Into Hunger Strike

Wednesday, 29 May 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Maria Alyokhina - one of the jailed members of Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot - has been hospitalised a week into her hunger strike.

The musician and activist is one of two band-members who remain incarcerated following their protest outside a cathedral in Moscow last year, and last week she announced she’d be embarking on a hunger strike - after she was refused the right to attend her own parole meeting.

After receiving support from Beatles legend Paul McCartney - who penned an open letter to Russian officials in support of Alyokhina (and other jailed Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova) - she’s now been hospitalised seven days into her strike.

Alyokhina has had a tough time in prison - she’s already spent five months in solitary confinement after claiming prison officials had purposely put her in a cell with hardened criminals, and goaded them to attack or intimidate her, according to reports on the BBC.

She’s also said that officials had attempted to turn her fellow inmates against her, by means of holding crackdowns on security ahead of her parole meeting - something which would irritate other prisoners, and cause them to dislike the musician.

We’ll have to wait and see how the story unfolds - hopefully, Alyokhina makes a recovery and a deal can be reached with Russian officials. What do you think of the news? Leave us a comment in the box below!
