Sir Elton John has been announced as the first recipient of a BRITs Icon Award, and he will celebrate with a special performance at the London Palladium on September 2.
The British Recorded Music Industry, the body that represents UK music companies, has unveiled the creation of a major new award that will recognise the very highest level of British music achievement.
The BRITs Icon award will become part of the established family of BRIT awards, but will be celebrated at a separate stand-alone event each year. It will be presented only to iconic artists whose writing, recording and performances set them apart as having made a lasting impact on the nation's culture.
With a live performance from Sir Elton, including of some of his best-loved songs, as well as new material from his forthcoming album 'The Diving Board', combined with a candid interview and special guest appearances, the show will be a spectacular tribute to his journey to become a revered British musical icon.
