These are good days for musicians seeking to build a name in their bedrooms and Plini, a 21-year-old songwriter from Sydney, recently added the ‘Sweet Nothings’ EP to his small, yet weighty set of DIY works.
There's a real sense of movement in each of the four tracks here. Opening feeds the ear a lovely set of liquid chords, irregular rhythms and eventually orchestral backing, while Tarred And Feathered laces its main melody and harmonies with bustling, positive energy.
Away features extensive lead guitar and bass tapping that complement a busy drum kit and the tracks build confidently rather than hurtling towards their crescendos. The range of dynamics and textures owe something to Plini's multi-instrumental grasp - organ, piano and strings all work with his prominent guitar.
It’s tough to ignore the incredible versatility, technical prowess and emotion in the lead guitar's phrasings. Talented musicians often overload their music with impressive, yet characterless fretboard acrobatics. Thankfully, Plini does not subject his audience to the same ordeal. The solos on Opening are wholesome yet light, devastating yet controlled.
Plini's sound is smooth, well-rounded, and, at its core, brimming with delightful energy. The album puts listeners into motion - they can soar and eventually reach a celestial landscape, sweating from the trip and anticipating the next step in this young guitarist's growth.
