Tool Discuss Legal Dispute At Heart Of Album Delay

Wednesday, 16 July 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Tool have discussed the ongoing wait for their new record, revealing that a legal dispute has prevented them from following up 2006’s ‘10,000 Days’.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone’s Kory Grow, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey explained the delay, admitting that the dispute had “drained our creative energy”.

“The fans are pissed at us,” Jones said. “And while part of me is selfish and goes, 'I'm not necessarily doing it for them,' it's time that they understand what's going on.”

On top of the legal wormhole that the band entered back in 2007 - which relates to an initial claim from an associate for artwork to be credited and an ensuing battle with their insurance company - Carey admitted that their family lives have also taken precedence in recent years.

“The whole thing is really depressing,” he said. “The bad thing is it's really time consuming. As we've gotten older and our priorities have changed, it's hard to get the band on a good, solid schedule as it is. People have kids now. And there's lots of other things that pop up. To throw this into the mix, it makes everything that much worse and stresses people out.”

Discussing the songwriting process for album five, meanwhile, both men are happy that the material they have so far ticks the ‘heavy’ box.

"Sometimes I feel we get a little too proggy or too into exploring time signatures but not getting heavy enough for my taste," Jones said. "There are some good nose-bleeding riffs happening, and I'm really happy about that. It's not out-of-the-gate crazy heavy, but there are these little journeys with nice paths that end up very heavy."
