Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago has entered rehab to treat alcohol and drug issues.
The band broke the news in a statement posted to their website, confirming that Santiago would spend at least 30 days at a rehabilitation centre.
“This is the best thing that Joey could have done, and we’re very proud that he’s taken this step,” drummer David Lovering said. “We ask all of our fans to support Joey while he’s on this road to recovery."
Pixies will release a new album, ‘Head Carrier’, on September 30 and will subsequently tour the UK and Europe before the end of the year. The band - completed by Black Francis and Paz Lenchantin - intend to fulfil these dates, but Santiago’s treatment will affect “planned promotional activities” for the LP.
