Dr. John has died aged 77.
The legendary New Orleans composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist died of a heart attack on June 6, according to a statement on Twitter.
Born Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack and also known as the Night Tripper, Dr John was a session musician from the 1950s until his death, and began to receive recognition in the 1960s after the release of his debut album, 1968's ‘Gris Gris’. His music combined elements of jazz, pop, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll, and in 1973 he made it into the charts with his first top ten hit, Right Place Wrong Time.
The rest of his career included six Grammy Award wins, an induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, more than 20 albums and stints working with the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Spiritualized, Jools Holland, B.B King and more.
