Cassius' Philippe Zdar Dies Aged 50

Thursday, 20 June 2019 Written by Laura Johnson

Philippe Zdar (pictured right) has died aged 50.

The producer, born Philippe Cerbonesch, was one half of the French duo Cassius, the other being Hubert Blanc-Francard, who is also known by his stage name Boom Bass. In a statement to Pitchfork, Zdar's agent said he accidentally fell from “a high floor of an old building in Paris.”

Philippe Zdar and Boom Bass have been making music and performing with eachother since the late 1980s. They began their musical career together as La Funk Mob before changing their name to Cassius in 1996. They released their debut album under the moniker in 1999 and their last record, 2016's 'Ibifornia', features Pharrell Williams, Mike D and Cat Power, among others.

Zdar and Cassius were also known for their production of other big acts, including Phoenix, Cat Power, OneRepublic, Two Door Cinema Club, Franz Ferdinand, Chromeo, and the Rapture, to name a few.

The new Cassius album 'Dreems' is due to arrive on June 21. It's not clear if the release will go ahead following Zdar's passing.
