Tim Minchin has released a new song.

Leaving LA serves as the first single from the Australian musician and comic's forthcoming debut studio album. It's accompanied by an animated, Tee Ken Ng-directed video and arrives following the recent news of Minchin's deal with major label BMG.

The poignant, piano-led break-up song combines pop and orchestral sounds while Minchin reflects on his time in Los Angeles. It was written by the Perth native during his final year living in the city in 2016. He said:

"It is meant to reflect the bitterness I felt when the project I had been working on for four years got trashed. But it’s also meant to feel a bit sad, and a bit funny, and a bit fond. It’s bittersweet; like a break-up song written for somebody you’re still a little in love with.

"I try my best to steer clear of clichés, but the famous sign felt to me like an unexploited metaphor: it, like the town it teeters above, is iconic, unique, two-dimensional… and, if you're expecting glamour, a bit disappointing."

Minchin has released comedy albums steadily since 2005’s 'Darkside'. His first studio record is due later this year, though an official release date is still to be announced.
