The Mountain Goats have unveiled a new track.
Picture Of My Dress is the latest preview of their new album, ’Getting Into Knives’, which will arrive through Merge Records on October 23. Frontman John Darnielle describes it as, “a pop-country song that’s still identifiably the Mountain Goats, universally relatable but still a little cracked.”
The idea for the track came about when Darnielle saw a tweet by poet Maggie Smith: "Photo essay that won’t happen: Divorced woman drives her rumpled c. 2005 wedding dress across the country and takes photos of it in various locations. It’s a metaphorical "Weekend at Bernie’s" sans stapled-on toupee and sunglasses, because the dead thing is the marriage."
Alongside the new single, the Mountain Goats have announced their first full band online concerts that will stream on October 22 and 29 at 9pm ET. The Jordan Lake Sessions were recorded at Manifold Recording in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Tickets are on sale, and purchases will allow viewing of the shows for 24 hours after the initial broadcast.
Last year, Stereoboard spoke with Darnielle about the band’s 2019 LP ’In League With Dragons’. Head here to read the interview.
