Lana Del Rey has released a cover of George Gershwin's Summertime.
The singer recorded her take on the 1935 jazz standard to help raise funds for two American orchestras, the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, whose performances through to June 2021 have been scrapped in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Fans are encouraged to donate to the Play Your Part fund and the NY Plays On campaign.
The swirling interpretation fuses gentle acoustic guitar with piano and comes with a retro style video that sees Del Rey performing with her COVID-19-tested backing band. Take a look below.
"We're incredibly grateful for Lana Del Rey’s support and for her drawing attention to the challenges arts organizations have faced over the past several months," said Chad Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles Philharmonic. "The performing arts have been hit especially hard by the pandemic, but we look forward to the day when the orchestra and artists, including Lana, will be able return to our stages again. In the meantime, we are extraordinarily thankful for her support and the many, many other donors who have stepped forward during this difficult time."
New York Philharmonic President and CEO, Deborah Borda added: "What a wonderful gift from Lana Del Rey! It’s particularly poetic, since the song is by George Gershwin — the legendary composer-pianist whose music the New York Philharmonic has premiered and with whom we performed. We are most grateful to Lana, as we are to all who are supporting us during a crisis faced by all performing arts organizations."
Tonight (November 20), the New York Philharmonic will host an online benefit gala via their website, www.nyphil.org. It'll also be livestreamed through the orchestra's YouTube and Facebook pages.
Summertime The Gershwin Version is a standalone track and will not appear on the singer's much-delayed sixth studio LP, 'Chemtrails Over the Country Club'. In October, meanwhile, Del Rey shared Let Me Love You Like A Woman, her first single since the release of her 2019 album 'Norman Fucking Rockwell!'
