Big Red Machine, the joint project from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner of the National, have announced their second album.
The follow-up to their 2018 self-titled debut is called 'How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?' and will arrive on August 27 via 37d03d.
Produced by Dessner at his own Long Pond studio in New York, the 15-track record is heralded by the stirring ballad Latter Days, which finds Vernon sharing vocals with Anaïs Mitchell over a piano-led melody and hushed percussion. Dessner said:
"It was clear to Anaïs that the early sketch Justin and I made of Latter Days was about childhood, or loss of innocence and nostalgia for a time before you’ve grown into adulthood — before you've hurt people or lost people and made mistakes. She defined the whole record when she sang that, as these same themes kept appearing again and again."
Other guest vocalists and writing collaborators featured on the record include Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, Ben Howard and This Is The Kit, Naeem, Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Nova, and Taylor Swift. Dessner's brother Bryce provided orchestration.
"This is all music I initially generated and feel emotionally connected to, but it has been very interesting to hear how different people relate to it and how different voices collide with it," added Aaron, who also tackles lead vocals on three tracks. "That's what makes it special. With everyone that's on this record, there's an openness, a creative generosity and an emotional quality that connects it all together."
Bon Iver will embark on a rescheduled UK and European tour this autumn, with continental dates also confirmed for August. The National, meanwhile, have rescheduled Irish shows in the diary for summer 2022.
