Founding Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison has died aged 46.
No cause of death has been given, but a statement from Jordison’s family reveals that he "passed away peacefully in his sleep." The full statement reads:
"We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26th, 2021. He was 46. Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow. To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.
"The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time. The family will hold a private funeral service and asks the media and public to respect their wishes."
Jordison was a member of the Iowa metal band from its inception in 1995 until 2013, and played on their 1999 self-titled debut, 2001's 'Iowa', 2004's 'Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)' and 2008's 'All Hope Is Gone'. He left for reasons that were never fully disclosed to the public, but he later revealed that towards the end of his tenure with the group he was diagnosed with a neuro-immune disorder called transverse myelitis.
In addition to Slipknot, he played in Murderdolls, Modifidious, Scar The Martyr, Sinsaenum, and other bands.
Since the news of Jordison's death broke, tributes have poured in from across the music community, including posts from Trivium, Anthrax and his former Slipknot bandmates Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan, with the latter two simply sharing a black square to their Twitter feed.
