Following Give Me The Future and Distorted Light Beam, Thelma + Louise marks the third preview of the band's as-yet-unannounced fourth album, due out later in 2021, though specifics are still to be revealed.
Inspired by the 1991 film of the same name, the track was co-penned with songwriter Rami Yacoub alongside longtime collaborator Mark Crew. It delivers a vigorous anchoring drum beat and sweeping synths that provide a fresh, airy backdrop for an anthemic chorus. Frontman Dan Smith said:
"It's this iconic feminist film about freedom, escapism, independence and escaping the worries and problems of life.
"I wanted to write a love letter to that film – a love letter to feminism, escapism and throwing off the shackles of a life that you may be frustrated by."
The song's accompanying video comes live from Future Inc. HQ, "a data-hungry, fake big tech enterprise from the future." Discussing the concept, Smith added that it gives the group the opportunity to, "poke fun at the way these companies appeal to us and appeal to the world, and advertise themselves and talk about themselves, and take themselves really seriously and earn huge amounts of money whilst taking all our data and more."
Bastille's last album came in the form of 'Doom Days', released in 2019. They also put out the 'Goosebumps' EP in December 2020.
