Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (Album Review)

Most of us can only dream of attaining levels of productivity similar to those Little Simz exhibited during the pandemic. Where many of us spent mornings struggling to get out of bed, the London rapper spent her time baring her soul during the creation of her fourth album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, and the result glows with fiery intensity.
Following up last spring’s lockdown-recorded ‘Drop 6’ EP while channelling the spirit of protests that followed the killing of George Floyd, the opening track and lead single Introvert offers up a deep, booming brass section paired with urgent strings to create a sound that matches the ferocity of last year’s conversations surrounding racism.
But, despite the grandeur and strength of the opener, ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’ quickly finds its rhythm in quieter moments more suited to the album’s name. It’s in this space that the collection shines brightest.
Two Worlds Apart uses delicious repetition and a much-appreciated Smokey Robinson sample to give us Little Simz at her most jazzy and chilled.
Towards the end of proceedings, How Did You Get Here gives us stripped back piano and room for her bars to breathe. The closer Miss Understood, meanwhile, is a heartfelt attempt to deconstruct her relationship with her sister set to crisp keys and controlled percussion.
The album’s peak, however, is undoubtedly the synthy funk of Protect My Energy. A retro-pop paean to the dancefloor fillers of the ‘90s, it’s also proof if we needed it that Little Simz has the ability to craft interesting and unique radio-friendly bangers.
The risk with an album as big as ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’—19 songs delivered in more than an hour—is that it falls into the category of “bloated.” But not this time. The lingering feeling is that Little Simz has been generous with her talents in serving up what will be remembered as one of the best albums of the year.
