As Perfume Genius, Mike Hadreas has been putting out celebrated work for 15 years, pairing for soul-warming elegance with gut-punch explorations of queer love and personal struggle. Zooming out, 2017’s ‘No Shape’ and the ensuing ‘Set My Heart on Fire Immediately’ are generally considered his crowning achievements, but ‘Glory’ certainly deserves to be in the conversation.
Hadreas’ seventh album is another stormer — a fantastic collection of sophisticated and wide-ranging indie songs that are sonically rich and full of subtle beauty. Assembled alongside longtime producer Blake Mills, Hadreas has described the record as his “most directly confessional” yet, exploring the “back and forth between internal and external”.
It’s a Mirror is a stunning way to kick things off, its gothic Americana aided by muscular, duelling guitars.
These confident sonics weigh against Hadreas’ lingering anxiety and paranoia, which is summarised nicely in the second verse: “What do I get out of being established? / I still run and hide when a man’s at the door”.
No Front Teeth is a breathtaking follow up. Aldous Harding’s guest vocals are tender and angelic, playing off Hadreas as the track meanders between quiet folk and explosive grunge. Later, on the ballad Me & Angel, piano lends a vulnerable edge to Hadreas’ romantic outpouring towards partner Alan Wyffels.
The second half has a darker outlook. Capezio is moody and sexy as Hadreas’ falsetto and funky bass tones provide a refreshing late-night vibe. The haunting Dion could be peak solo Thom Yorke, while Hanging Out is an unsettling, darkly atmospheric highlight. There’s a lot to love on ‘Glory’ — its songs are eclectic and gorgeous while revealing more with each listen. It stands up next to Perfume Genius’ best.
