Young Dolph, real name Adolph Robert Thornton Jr, has died aged 36.
The rapper walked into Makeda's Butter Cookies in his hometown of Memphis around 1pm on Wednesday (November 12) when a gunman drove up, shot through the window and killed him.
No information about the shooter has been released by police at this point. News of his death was confirmed by Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, who said:
"The tragic shooting death of rap artist Young Dolph serves as another reminder of the pain that violent crime brings with it. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
Born in Chicago and raised by his grandmother in Memphis, Dolph pursued an independent approach to the music business—much like Los Angeles star Nipsey Hussle, who was killed in 2019.
He released his debut album, 'King of Memphis', in 2016. His latest LP, 'Rich Slave', featuring the single RNB with Megan Thee Stallion, arrived in 2020.
Since the news of Dolph's passing, there's been an outpouring of tributes from figures across the music industry, including Megan Thee Stallion and Chance The Rapper.
