Kelly Lee Owens has won the Welsh Music Prize for 'Inner Song'.
The Welsh vocalist and producer saw off competition from Gruff Rhys, The Anchoress, Afro Cluster, Carwyn Ellis and Rio 18, Datblygu, El Goodo, Gwenifer Raymond, Kelly Lee Owens, Mace The Great, Novo Amor, Private World and Pys Melyn to succeed last year’s winner, Deyah, who took home the gong for 'Care City'.
Returning for its 11th year with a shortlist of 12 albums, the award recognises the best in creativity from the burgeoning Welsh music scene, as well as music made by Welsh people around the world.
The winner was announced during a ceremony at The Gate in Cardiff this evening (November 23). Owens said:
“It feels amazing. As a Welsh artist to be recognised by your country, ultimately for me, is the greatest honour. I’m so passionate about Wales and I want everyone to know where I’m from.
“I remember last time when I was nominated, my nana Jeanette came down and since then she has passed away and she’d be so thrilled, I’m sorry I’m emotional - but she’s on the album and she’d be so chuffed. Thank you so much."
Datblygu — whose lead vocalist David R. Edwards died earlier this year — received the Welsh Music Inspiration Award for their influence on Welsh-language music and the alternative music scene. Alice Low, Juice Menace and Melin Melyn took home the Triskel Award, which celebrates and supports three emerging artists that offer a bright future for music in Wales.
Owens is currently touring the UK, with shows left in Leeds, Birmingham, Cardiff, Brighton, Manchester and London. Tickets are on sale.
