Adwaith Announce Second Album 'Bato Mato' With First Single Eto

Friday, 25 February 2022 Written by Jon Stickler

Adwaith have announced their second album.

The follow-up to their 2019 Welsh Music Prize-winning debut 'Melyn' is called 'Bato Mato' and will arrive on July 1 via Libertino Records. It was mostly recorded at Giant Wafer studios in Llandrindod Wells, mid-Wales, with 'Melyn' producer Steffan Pringle.

As a preview, the Welsh post-punk trio have unveiled the soaring first single, Eto, which is sung in their native tongue, though it's influenced by the frosty outer reaches of the Siberian and Mongolian wilderness. They wrote the song the day after their trip to perform at UU.Sound festival in the city of Ulan-Ude, Siberia in 2020.

“We really wanted to write a heartfelt song about being infatuated with someone," the band said. "This isn't something we normally write about and we wanted to approach this song differently to our other ones. We felt inspired to write a big pop song."

Vocalist Hollie Singer explained: "Our journey through the Siberian and Mongolian wilderness influenced the writing and sound of the album to be as open and big as the limitless sky around us there".

Bassist Gwenllian Anthony added: "It was a life changing trip that really inspired us to write this album. The barren landscape and brutalist architecture really seeped into these songs and the use of world instruments was heavily inspired by this journey."

Adwaith will appear at BBC 6 Music Festival in early April and London's Sebright Arms on April 13, followed by a set at Cardiff's Wales Goes Pop!, and Wrexham for Focus Wales. In August, they'll perform at Green Man in Brecon.
