Let’s Eat Grandma’s third studio album finds the duo in terrific creative shape, delivering 10 tracks of exuberant pop music led by gorgeously unaffected lyricism and singing.
It demonstrates, among other things, how the hyper processed, corporate production values so prevalent in huge swathes of chart music can get in the way of humane, conscientious storytelling.
We open with throwback synth bopper Happy New Year—a bonafide party song which could easily be ruined by autotune and robot voice. Instead, you have Rosa Walton’s untrained murmurs of youthful friendship and adventure, all topped off with the sound of fireworks. Tremendous.
Levitation is even better, with a soaring chorus and memorable melodic patches underscored by smashy bin beats that recall rhythmic performance troupe Stomp. It's tracks like this that show Let's Eat Grandma at their best, displaying undoubted pop chops that recall Chvrches, Bat for Lashes and, at a push, Erasure.
But there is trauma within the exuberance. The instrumental track In the Cemetery is an ethereal synth piece seemingly about the 2019 death of Jenny Hollingworth’s boyfriend, who was lost to bone cancer at the tragically young age of 22.
And there are clear references to this throughout the album, not least on Strange Conversations, an acoustic guitar track that just about keeps it together, and on Sunday. This elegant indie ballad highlights the vocal similarities between Let’s Eat Grandma and The Sundays’ Harriet Wheeler.
It's delicate, affecting stuff and ‘Two Ribbons’ is an exceptional album from two of the most precocious and fresh-sounding singer-songwriters in the public realm.
