Caribou - Honey (Album Review)

Wednesday, 16 October 2024 Written by Jacob Brookman

If earlier Caribou albums hadn’t already, ‘Honey’ proves that Dan Snaith is a sure pair of hands for energetic and musically intellectual dance music. But what sets it apart from previous endeavours is the pace. From the opening track, Broke My Heart, this record picks up momentum that evolves throughout and never wavers.

On first listen, you are tempted to praise Snaith’s ability to find so many vocalists. Aided by versatile arrangements throughout, each track is characterised by unique stylings. Googling the album, though, reveals that Snaith used his own voice and AI to deliver these lines. Harbinger of doom or not, it largely works.

Calling out the use of AI vocals in a dance album — a genre that has embraced technology from the jump — comes across as luddites protecting a genre that never really existed, but it still needs to work sonically.

Campfire is the album’s first step change and maybe where the AI seams come apart. While more downbeat in spirit, it gives little away in terms of bpm and build. It also may be one of the album's more unsuccessful moments as Snaith gives us his best imitation of a Soundcloud rapper.

But, directly after, the backend of the album blooms and grows into shaggier, blurrier beats in Climbing. This track acts as an apex, playing with the paradox of the refrain “falling for you”. All in all, ‘Honey’ is a joyful dive into a sticky club, with enough variety and bumping beats to please even those who haven’t stepped foot in one for 15 years.
