Suggs and Paul Weller have teamed up for a joint single, Ooh Do U Fink U R.
The Madness frontman, 61, and The Jam star, 63, have known each other for some time, and were inspired to write the track based on their schooldays in Camden and Woking in the 1970s. Suggs commented:
"I think teachers are the best people in the world, I love them with all my heart. But you know all those great teachers you read about who dragged their pupils up, and encouraged them and made them into the best possible version of themselves they could be? Well, unfortunately I didn't have one of those! Ooh Do U Fink U R was a phrase I heard more often than I wished and sums up my school years - constantly being told to know my place and keep in my box, being given no encouragement but still never giving in, and never giving up. Chatting to Paul reminded me of those experiences. We both found enthusiasm and a purpose in music, and that pulled us through."
Weller added: "Me and Suggs have been talking about doing something together for the last few years so to see it finally happen is amazing! I love the tune and working with him. He's truly a man of many talents. We wanted to do something special and I really think this track is."
Blending Motown and '60s R&B stylings, with tongue-in-cheek lyricsm, the sunny, reflective track was recorded at the Modfather's Black Barn studios. It's available digitally, with a limited edition 7" arriving on June 17.
Madness will host their own Jubilation Festival in celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June, featuring three stages of music as well as a headline set from the band. They also have summer shows lined up in Belfast, Tetbury, Cardiff Brandon, Newton Le Willows, Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury, as well as a headline slot at The Big Top Festival and a rescheduled show in Dublin. Later in May, they'll take The Ladykillers Tour to North America.
Paul Weller, meanwhile, recently wrapped up a spring headline UK tour, and has outdoor shows in the diary for June and July, including performances at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, Dreamland Margate and Swansea Singleton Park.
