A previously unheard version of David Bowie's single Starman has been unearthed.
Parlophone Records have released the track to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary artist's fifth studio album, 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars', which also features the songs Moonage Daydream, Suffragette City and Ziggy Stardust.
The previously unreleased recording is titled Starman (Top Of The Pops Version – 2022 Mix), and captures Bowie's appearance on Top Of The Pops. In 1972, the Musicians Union rules stated that in order to appear on Top Of The Pops, the artist must re-record their song and, in this case, sing live over the top.
It features the backing track and the backing vocals, recorded at London's Trident Studios, along with a one-off Bowie ad-lib, "Hey Brown Cow", recorded for the show. It was mixed earlier in 2022 by 'Ziggy Stardust' co-producer Ken Scott from the BBC's original multi-tracks. Press play below.
In addition to the remix, Parlophone Records have reissued 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars' as a limited edition 50th anniversary half-speed LP and picture disc.
