John Cale has announced his first new album in a decade.
Mercy, the long awaited follow-up to 2012's 'Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood', will be released on January 20 via Double Six / Domino.
It will feature his previously shared single Night Crawling, as well as collaborations with Animal Collective, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, Actress and Weyes Blood's Natalie Mering, among others.
The latter appears on the newly revealed cut Story Of Blood, a genre-bending, experimental and atmospheric composition that clocks in at seven and a half minutes. Cale said:
“I’d been listening to Weyes Blood’s latest record and remembered Natalie’s puritanical vocals. I thought if I could get her to come and sing with me on the ‘Swing your soul’ section, and a few other harmonies, it would be beautiful. What I got from her was something else! Once I understood the versatility in her voice, it was as if I’d written the song with her in mind all along. Her range and fearless approach to tonality was an unexpected surprise. There’s even a little passage in there where she’s a dead-ringer for Nico."
Head below to check out the song's accompanying video by Emmy-winning director Jethro Waters, alongside the album's artwork and tracklist.
Prior to the record's release, Cale will tour the UK this autumn. The trek will include a performance at the Llais festival in Cardiff on October 28. Tickets are on sale now.
